L Permit - For A Short Stay

The Swiss L permit entitles an individual to stay in Switzerland for up to one year and is aimed for individuals coming to Switzerland for a temporary period of time only.

An L permit can be obtained based upon employment, family reunification, the need for medical treatment in Switzerland, or other valid reasons.

It is extendable to allow a stay in Switzerland totalling 24 months under special circumstances. Depending upon an individual’s nationality and basis for the permit, a quota might be applicable in stays of more than 4 months.

B Permit - For A Long Stay

Swiss B permits can be granted for the initial period of one year (subject to an annual renewal) for Non-EU nationals or for a period of five years for EU nationals and their family members. These can be obtained based upon grounds of employment, self-employment, financial interest, family reunification, among others.

Depending upon an individual’s nationality and basis for the permit, quotas may be applicable as well as other nuanced practices of the competent canton of filing.

C Permit - For Permanent Residence

Depending on the nationality and personal situation of the applicant, a Swiss C permit (permanent residence permit) may be granted after 5 or 10 years of residency in Switzerland prior to the application filing. The exact C permit process and requirements will vary depending upon an individual’s local commune and canton of residence.

Permits Based Upon Family Reunification

A Swiss residence permit (normally type L or B) can be granted to qualifying family members of the applicant (i.e. spouse and minor children). This permit enables the family member to join a Swiss national or Swiss permit holder in Switzerland under family reunification provisions. The type of permit granted will depend upon on the Swiss permit-holder’s status in Switzerland, or whether or not the resident of Switzerland is a Swiss national.  Either an L or B permit can be granted initially to the qualifying family member, depending upon the particular constellation of the case.
