Important Information About Your Swiss C Permit Application
When can I apply for a Swiss C Permit?
A foreign national residing in Switzerland can apply for a C permit either after 5 years or 10 years of continuous residence in Switzerland, depending upon their exact nationality and personal situation. For people who have been married already to a C permit-holder or a Swiss national for 5 years, an application for a C permit can be made after only 5 years of residence on a B permit.
For people who are not married to a C permit holder or a Swiss national but have held a B permit for at least 5 years, it is possible to apply for a C permit, however a person’s specific nationality will dictate the exact requirements.
Swiss C Permit for EU Citizens
Normally Swiss immigration law makes a clear distinction between the requirements for EU citizens and Non EU citizens. However, the rules on C permits are very special and there is no across-the-board rule that makes all EU nationals subject to one rule and all Non EU nationals subject to another rule. The requirements in a particular case will depend upon a person’s nationality as well as their personal situation.
Swiss C Permit for Non-EU Citizens
As previously stated, For Non EU citizens the rules on C permits are very special and there is no across-the-board rule that applies to all Non EU nationals. The requirements in a particular case will depend upon a person’s nationality as well as their personal situation.
Swiss C Permit Requirements 2024
A significant change in the law on C permits has occurred in February 2023. It is now the case that all nationalities (except for Germans, Austrians, and Liechtensteiners) have to submit proof of skills in the local language in order to obtain a C permit. It used to be that certain nationalities, (French nationals, for example), were exempt from such C permit language requirements. This is no longer the case.
Swiss C Permit Renewals
It is generally quite simple to renew a Swiss C permit. C permits are valid for a period of 5 years, so a renewal takes place only every 5 years. At the time of renewal, the authorities will check that the requirements are still met, (i.e. that the person still resides in Switzerland, respects Swiss law and order, and has not become dependent upon public social assistance).

I have been on YOUR side of the Swiss permit application process
In 2012, I moved to Switzerland for love and have lived very happily since then in the gorgeous city of Luzern. Nonetheless, my first Swiss residence permit application was as nail biting as it was fraught with unknowns. With some patience and luck it worked out, but my husband and I had no help to navigate the stressful process.
3 years later my husband experienced a near miss with his permanent residence application when he realized he had a permit quite different to the one he thought he had, and my own permanent residence permit application in 2017 mysteriously seemed to go missing only to reappear with an overnight approval some 8 months later.
Together with my husband and daughter, we have all been through the exacting demands of acquiring Swiss citizenship which proved as long and exhausting as it was exciting (and successful!). I have just become a Swiss citizen as of 2023.
Therefore, I really know from personal experience exactly how stressful and challenging this can all be and the importance of having an expert guide you through your journey!
After spending 8 years advising uniquely on Swiss immigration matters for two top law firms, I founded Swiss Permit Solutions in order to offer companies and individuals my expertise in navigating through the many complexities of the Swiss immigration process with a personalized touch. I have managed over a thousand Swiss immigration cases, consulting, coordinating, troubleshooting, and negotiating with the multiple stakeholders who are involved. These stakeholders include private clients, or companies and their employees, federal authorities, cantonal authorities, and the numerous local communal authorities where the journey of a Swiss permit can often start and finish.
Managing the process alone can be daunting. So, whether it is a first-time permit application, a renewal, or ongoing strategic advice that you need, I am here to help you, your family, or your company find the best solution possible.
